Since the advent of charter flights and the incredible growth of foreign owned properties in Tenerife there has been an ever increasing demand for cheap flights to Tenerife. Flying to ones holidays in Tenerife only became possible for the ordinary working class in the nineteen seventies when the normal purchase was a one or two week package holiday that included flights, transfers, hotels and food. Later as a result of these package holidays, a few people bought their own property in Tenerife; this in turn generated a market for just a "flight to Tenerife". This has become a major part of the flying business in and out of Tenerife, so much so that several companies are now running scheduled services to various parts of the United Kingdom on a daily basis.

Seen here on a very quiet Sunday afternoon is the Reina Sofia (named after the present day Queen Sofia of Spain) international airport of southern Tenerife, normally full of taxis, buses and tourists from many corners of the globe but mainly Brits catching their flights to the UK from Tenerife.

The interior, the central section of which houses the normal bars cafeterias etc with check-in desks at either end; I always seem to manage to start at the wrong end when trying to find the correct desk for my flights to the UK from Tenerife. Murphy’s Law!

With the recent massive rise in the price of oil (the second largest expense for them) the airline industry is looking at many methods of cutting its costs, to enable them to offer cheap flights to Tenerife and for those flights to appear reasonable compared to a year ago. One of these is to reduce the amount of legroom in already cramped cabins; personally I would rather pay extra knowing that I would have reasonable legroom than to be packed in like a sardine in a tin. Let's say that 250 passengers pay 200 pounds per head for a flight to Tenerife, an income of 50,000 pounds, if we reduced the number of seats by 50 then the airline would need to charge 250 pounds per ticket for the same income. Then of course there is the saving of weight and the resulting savings in fuel and food etc. this weight saving could perhaps be used for more air freight? I'm not advocating this for all flights because we know that many people will still search for cheap flights to Tenerife no matter how inexpensive cheap flights to Tenerife are.

Ticket sales from Tenerife to the UK and other European destinations have been, until recently, a very hit and miss affair; most people having to ring round various agencies and hang onto the end of a telephone while someone checks availability. Finally the schedule flight operators and now many of the agencies are getting their acts together and providing an on-line service making a huge saving of both the sellers and the buyer’s time.
